There is a tremendous amount to organise for a wedding.  Below we have provided a guide as to the tasks that are required and roughly when they are needed to ensure your wedding day runs as smoothly as possible.

Wedding Planning Checklist

12 Months +

  • Start a wedding folder
  • Work out your budget
  • Consider wedding insurance
  • Work out savings plan and open savings account
  • Set wedding date!
  • Decide numbers and prepare draft guest list
  • Order and send save the date cards
  • Choose and book a wedding planner
  • Decide on wedding theme / style
  • Religious? Book church – Civil? Book registrar
  • Research and book venue

9-11 Months

  • Choose and book your wedding photographer / wedding videographer
  • Meet your minister or registrar
  • Choose and book a toastmaster
  • Choose wedding party and nominate 2 witnesses
  • Assign roles and responsibilities
  • Buy wedding lingerie
  • Buy wedding shoes
  • Book fireworks if required
  • Choose and book wedding cake supplier
  • Order bridal accessories – veil, tiara, jewellery
  • Order your wedding dress
  • Choose and book florist
  • Choose and order bridesmaids, page boy and flower girl outfits
  • Compile a gift and/or wish list
Give notice of marriage (registry office)

6-8 Months

  • Select music for ceremony and finalise order of service
  • Choose and book bride’s transport to and from wedding
  • Choose keepsakes and bridal favour
  • Finalise venue, food and drinks for reception (caterer)
  • Organise decorations for reception
  • Book hairdresser and beautician appointment
  • Book your wedding night hotel
  • Decide on wedding hairstyle
  • Purchase / hire groom / usher outfit
  • Research and book honeymoon
  • Check passports, vaccinations, visas and insurance

4-5 Months

  • Order wedding stationery (invitations, order of service etc)
Choose and buy wedding rings
  • Organise accommodation for guests
  • Arrange transport for guests
Don’t miss dress/menswear fitting
  • Arrange marriage licence and bands to be read

3 Months

  • Organise hen do – cost per person
Organise stag do – cost per person
  • Send invitations and gift list and chase RSVPs
  • Buy presents for parents and wedding party

2 Months

  • Choose your wedding vows and give to minister / registrar
  • Make sure you have your marriage authorities
  • Finalise your guest list
  • Finalise seating plan and order place cards
  • Confirm final numbers with caterer
Arrange final fitting of wedding dress / bridesmaids dresses etc

1 Month

  • Finalise plans and timings with helpers and provide the checklist
Inform florist of button hole numbers
  • Write speeches
  • Attend ceremony rehearsal

2 Weeks

  • Final check on all previous booking
  • Give photographer / videographer must take list
  • Wear-in your wedding shoes
Arrange date to collect wedding outfits

1 Week

  • Make arrangement for taking gifts from the reception
  • Order honeymoon money
  • Pack bags for wedding night and honeymoon
  • Give cosmetics and toiletries to mum or bridesmaid
  • Best man to inspect venue on the morning of the wedding

1 Day

  • Have luggage taken to hotel / venue
  • Ensure best man has rings, copies of speeches, vows and messages

Your BIG Day!

  • Have buttonholes delivered to ushers
  • Put you engagement ring on right hand
  • Post or deliver cake to those not attending the wedding


  • Send thank you note
  • Make a will
  • Notify banks and other officials of change of name
